We get daily calls from people asking about having a towbar fitted to their Motability car.
The good news is that if you’re a Mobility car user, you can have a tow bar fitted. You will need to let Mobility know, but providing you are having a manufacturer-approved wiring kit fitted and the towbar fitting company is VAT registered, there should be no problem.
Before having a tow bar fitted to a Motability vehicle, there are a few important things you need to know…
You need to let Motability know you are having a tow bar fitted. This is for their vehicle records and insurance purposes.
The Motability agent will let you know if they require the tow bar removing before you hand the car back or if they will accept the vehicle with a tow bar fitted.
Motability car towbars can only be fitted by a VAT-registered company. This stops self-fitting and fitting by non-approved fitters.
Vehicle-specific dedicated wiring that is manufacturer-approved must be fitted. (You cannot have a universal or bypass wiring fitted, as this will invalidate the vehicle’s warranty.)
At the end of the Motability contract, you will hand the car back. Depending on what Motability require will depend on how you deal with this. If they are willing to accept the vehicle with the tow bar installed, it’s just a case of handing the car back to them. If they want the vehicle back without the tow bar, then you will need to get the tow bar removed. This shouldn’t be a problem, providing you have saved the rear impact beam that the original installer will have handed to you after fitting the tow bar.
