When a vehicle is fitted with a dedicated tow bar wiring loom, in most cases, the vehicle software needs updating so that the towing safety features are enabled. Once this is completed the vehicle will automatically activate the safety features when the trailer plug is connected.

The towing safety features on a vehicle can differ depending on the make, model, and year of manufacture.

Usually, the towing safety features that are active after a software update include:

  • On-dash trailer bulb monitoring
  • Automatic parking sensor deactivation when reversing
  • Trailer sway control active
  • ABS and Cruise control changes

There are several vehicle manufacturers that do not have aftermarket towbar coding, including BMW, KIA, Hyundai, Nissan, and Volvo.

Most of the other manufacturers require a software update.

We can now offer vehicle software updates for many VW group vehicles, including those manufactured during 2024. Up to now, it has not been possible to update the software on any of the 2024 onwards Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) vehicles, this includes main dealers.

We always recommend having dedicated wiring fitted and coded to ensure the vehicle complies with MOT legislation and insurance compliance.

Dedicated wiring uses the original manufacturer connections so that the vehicle complies with recommended guidelines for any vehicle warranty..

At Ultimate Towbars we fit dedicated wiring and update the vehicle software as standard, for all appropriate vehicles.
